Packing Luggage

When packing cabin luggage / carry-on bag you are advised to pack in layers - a layer of clothes, then electronic items , more clothes, and then any heavier items. This will help airline and transportation security officers see what's in your bag. Innocent items can actually appear to be potential threats in an X-ray image if packed randomly. Pack all your coats and jackets in your checked baggage when possible. Any that you are wearing will have to be taken off and x-rayed.

Do not wrap gifts. If a security officer needs to inspect a package, they may have to unwrap your gift. Please wait until you've reached your final destination to wrap gifts.

Undeveloped film should go into your carry-on bag. You will able to declare film that is faster than 800-speed to a transportation security officer for physical inspection to avoid it being X-rayed.

Do not pack oversized electronics (laptops, full-size video game consoles, DVD players and video cameras that use cassettes) in your checked in hold baggage when possible. However you will be required to remove these items from your carry-on bag and submit them separately for x-ray screening. Small electronic items such as iPods can remain in your carry-on luggage.

If you're not sure about whether you can bring an item through the checkpoint, put it in your checked bag or leave it at home, A list of banned iterms is given here.

X-Rays & Body Searches Adults

Transportation security officers have to identify any metal that is detected at the checkpoint. If the metal detector alarms when you pass through an X ray machine , you will be required to undergo additional screening. This will include a hand-wand and pat-down inspection. You may be asked to undergo these checks on more than one occasion. befire boarding your flight.

Items That Can Set Off Metal Detector Alarms:

Body Piercings. Certain metal body piercings may cause you to alarm at the metal detector, which will result in you getting additional screening. If additional screening is required, you may ask to remove your body piercing in private as an alternative to the pat-down search.

Head Coverings. You are permitted to wear head coverings and religious garments during the screening process. You may be directed to additional screening if your headwear or clothing (religious or otherwise) is loose fitting or large enough to hide prohibited items..

Shoes. Passengers are required to remove their shoes before entering the walk-through metal detector at all U.S. and other international airports and put them through the x-ray machine for inspection. This allows officers to see if the shoes have been tampered with in any way.

Screening of Children

All carry-on baggage, including children's bags and items, must go through the X-ray machine.  Examples include: nappies diaper bags, blankets, and toys. All child-related equipment that will fit through the X-ray machine must go through the X-ray machine.  Examples include: buggies strollers, umbrella-strollers, baby carriers, car and booster seats, backpacks, and baby slings.

Medications, baby formula and food, breast milk, and juice are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding 3.4 ounces (100ml) and are not required to be in the normal zip-top bag. (more) Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint

When you arrive at the checkpoint, collapse or fold your child-related equipment.  Secure items that are in the pockets, baskets, or attached to the equipment and place it on the X-ray belt for inspection. Plastic bins are provided to deposit such items.

If any of your child-related equipment does not fit through the X-ray machine, security officers will visually and physically inspect it.

Children & The Walk-Through Metal Detector

If your child can walk without your assistance, we recommend that you and your child walk through the metal detector separately. If you are carrying your child through the metal detector and the alarm sounds, our Security Officer will have to additionally screen both you and your child.

Remove babies and children from their strollers or infant carriers so that our Security Officers can screen them individually. You may not pass the child to another person behind you or in front of you during this process. Do not pass your child to our Security Officer to hold. Our Security Officer may ask for your help screening your child.

Pets & Animals (Internal US Flights Only)

Please remove all animals from their carrying cases and send the case through the X-ray machine. Hold your pet in your arms and proceed through the metal detector.
