Reviews Of Hotels & Apartments In Amsterdam

Accommodation standards in Amsterdam vary tremendously and booking a hotel online in this city can be like playing russian roulette. At present we feel that the nearer the red light district a hotel is the more discerning you need to be. Some hotels in and around this area are mainly aimed at the stag and hen crowds who they feel can be taken for a ride.

An example of this is the 2 star Sarphati Hotel previously known as the Albert Hotel which is consistently the subject of bad reports. It claims to be a family hotel with well kept rooms offering continental style breakfast. It seems to specialise in party crowds - especially at weekends - who return to the hotel slightly worse for wear at all hours. Fair enough but its not really suitable for young chidren trying to sleep. The rooms are poorly maintained and the carpets dire. The breakfasts are basic and the beverages tea or coffee come out of a vending machine. At €80 - €100 for a night for a double its as laughable as the laid back service. Bring back Basil.

One 2 star hotel that seems decent is the Acro Hotel at Jan Luijkenstraat 44 1071 CR Amsterdam. Telephone +31 (0)20 662 0526. The hotel is clean , knows the meaning of service and apparently does a good breakfast. On paper it is slightly more expensive than some 2 star hotels but we know that they often are willing to do deals if you ring them direct. website.

Slightly upmarket value can be found with Maes Bed and Breakfast at Herenstraat 26 hs, 1015 Amsterdam Telephone 31 20 427 5165. The accommodation here is very homely and slightly colourful even bohemian. Double rooms start around €110 including tax with dicount for single occupants. However they also offer some really nice apartments - starting at €115 per night. These apartments are well furnished and in the Jordaan area of the city, and pricewise are competitive with hotels. website

Highly regarded by quite a few people is the classy Hotel Amsterdam & de roode Leeuw Hotel at Damrak 93-94 1012 LP Amsterdam. Telephone 31 0 20 555 0 666. First class accommodation, excellent service and a very good restaurant. Some would say it was expensive but others say you get what you pay for here. website Ed note Theres a rumour that they are negotiable as well.

Backpacking Hostels In Amsterdam

There are three Flying Pig Hostels in Amsterdam which have earned the respect of backpackers worldwide. Prices on average are around €16 for a bed in a double room and breakfast. Special deals are sometimes available. All offer free internet acess. The 'Uptown' hostel is thought by some to be particularly good. Some age restrictions apply.website.

Shelter Christian Hostels have two hostels in Amsterdam. These hostels are more expensive than some but are exceptionally clean fairly spacious and renowned for their atmosphere.

Editorial note March 2010. We have had several reports that hostel prices are falling in Amsterdam. St Christophers Inns are reportedly offering a limited number of beds at €10 per night. For the latest info see website.

Camping & Campsites In Amsterdam

Camping Zeeburg at Camping Zeeburg Zuider IJdijk 20 Amsterdam 1095 KN Telephone 31-20-694 44 30 is open all year round and dependable. You can rent a tent or a cabin and rent a bike for trips to the city centre about 6km away. Tent prices start at €10.50 high season - particulary good value here are the cabins for 1-2 people for €40 high season. This campsite is child and animal friendly. website

Camping de Badhoeve – Kinselmeer at Uitdammerdijk 10 1026 CP Amsterdam. We are told that this camp is 'cute' with really friendly staff , pleasant surroundings and very good food. Tried to check some details but their website was having a bad day.

Gaspercamping at Loosdrechtreef 7, 1108 AZ Amsterdam Zuidoost Telephone 31 0 20 6969369. On price (large tents are around €7 per night) and sheer size this site wins hands down. Good facilities and child friendly. However its downside is that it has no equipment to rent and is a little too formal. website
