The most striking thing about clubbing in Paris is that serious clubbers in this city tend to patronise venues that offer live bands and as a result many venues seem to have moved away from routine club mights where the programme is the same each week. It is there for important to check the website to see what a clubs got lined up as often the genre differs from one week to the next. The upside of this is that Paris, which has a smaller clubbing scene than some other european capitals such as Amsterdam, often attracts more big name artists more than its rivals.

Artists from all over the world appear here with Subliminal and the Ministry of Sound crew in danger of becoming resident. Its well worth checking out whats occurring at La Flèche d’Or at 102 Bis Rue De Bagnolet 75020 Paris Telephone 01 446 40102 as this club (in what appears to be a former train station) has a following with Parisian clubbers of several genre's. It regular puts on live gigs and club nights live covering electro indie punk and rock and thats for just starters. See website for programme. Admission is generally free and as a result the drinks are a little pricey. Editorial Comment Often has English bands and appreciated by serious clubbers.

Another club that puts on some good programmes is Le Cabaret Sauvage at 59 boulevard Macdonald, Paris 19. Telephone 01 420 90309 (nearest metro Porte de la Villette). Music type is very variable but there seems to be bias to drum n' bass electronic and techno. see website for details. Admission charges vary up to €20 but the drinks seemed cheap enough. Editorial Comment. Decent venue which has seem high profile guests can get packed but has no regular nights come on people sort that out.

Le Cab at 2 pl du Palais-Royal, Telephone 01 586 25625 plays r&b and house. Open Wednesday -Saturday from 11.30pm - 5am. Admission charges around €20 - €25 and two drinks cost €25. website. Editorial Comment Our crew won't be going back as cost aside the staff were not friendly, the crowd was older and it was too commercial like the music.

One long established Paris music venue is Le Gibus at 18 rue du Fbg-du-Temple, Paris 11 Telephone 01.470 07888 (nearest metro République or Temple). If your parents know it the truth is out they were punk rockers twenty years ago! Nowdays its home to hip hop, r&b and reggae and just about anything memorable from the last twenty years. It opens Fridays AND Saturdays at midnight until 6am. website Editorial Comment Admission charges vary from €8 - €20 with drinks between €5 - €10. All round it's one of Paris fairest clubs.

Popular with locals is Le Glaz art at 7-15 avenue de la Porte de la Villette, Paris 19 Telephone 01 403 65565 (nearest metro Porte de la Villette). Genre heres includes breakbeat drum n bass dub and electronic. Check website for dates admission charges etc and programmes which regularly include live acts. Opens around 9pm closes between 2 and 5 am depending on programme. Editorial Comment DJ's here are well respected especially those on beat nights. Decent club.

Point Ephemere at 200 quai de Valmy Paris 10, Telephone 01 403 40248 (nearest metro Jaurès) is pure heaven for those into electronic which is a daily at this venue which includes a restaurant. More info on website. Editorial Note Held in high regard by those who know

The Rex Club at 5 boulevard Poissonnière Paris 2 Telephone 01 423 61096 (nearest metro Bonne Nouvelle) is one serious techno club streets ahead of all its rivals so much so the waiting list of leading DJ's in this genre willing to play here continues to grow. The club opens Wednesday to Saturday from 11.30pm to 6am. Admission and drink prices vary - see website. Editorial Comment. DJ's and music aside the acoustics are also something else.

Batofar near the quay François-Mauriac Paris 13 Telephone 01 536 01730 (nearest metro Quai de la Gare) is a sound bet if you are into dance dub electro dub step or techno. Occasionally has some world class acts. see website. The admission and drink charges here are amongst the best in Paris. Club Opens 11pm-6am Monday - Saturday but also has a Sunday morning session on the first Sunday in every month from 6am til midday for those who can't sleep. Editorial Comment Deserves respect - Its practically an institution.

Gay Clubs In Paris

The longstanding Queen Club at 102 av des Champs-Elysees Paris 8 Telephone 01 538 90890 (nearest metro George V) plays a broad range of music seven nights a week with some nights devoted to a specific genre see website. The club opens from 11pm - 5am on Mondays, from midnight-6am on Tuesday Wednesday & Thursdays. On Fridays and Saturdays its midnight until 8am. Admission Charges €15 - €20 with drinks generally €10. Editorial Comment Has a hardcore of regulars and can get busy even early in the week.

Red Light at 34 rue du Départ Paris 15 Telephone 01 427 99453 (nearest metro Montparnasse Bienvenüe) is a gay friendly club playing house techno and trance to a young clubbers. Club often has guest DJ's from other parts of Europe. Club opens on Friday & Saturdays from midnight until 11am. website Admission generally around €25 with drinks about €10. Editorial Comment Well heeled but down to earth crowd rare.

Bars in Paris

Cafe Charbon at 109 rue Oberkampf Paris 11 for years has been thought as the hub of cafe/ bar nightlife in this area. Its classic decor abundance of mirrors and intimate tables have made it a favourite with locals and visitors. Opens daily at 9am and closes 2am Sunday - Thursday and 4am Friday and Saturday. website Editorial comment. Always dependable and fairly decent prices.

Rough Passion at 14 rue Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, Paris 9, (nearest metro St Georges or Pigalle) is, we are told by a good authority, resented by rival bars. This cleverly run bar wants you to come back and willl make sure you have no reason not to. Firstly the food is first class whether you are having a snack at lunchtime or an evening meal. The wine list is extensive and its author knowlegeable. The prices at around €20 for a evening meal and €5 for a glass of of good wine put other bars in the 'also' ran category.website Open luchtimes Monday - Friday Midday - 3pm. In the evenings its open Tuesday - Saturday from 6pm until 1am. Editorial Comment Probably one of the best priced quality bars in Paris.

Le Bar Dix at 10 rue de l’Odéon Paris 6 (nearest metro Odéon) is an unassuming long established old world bar that has a rare intimacy about it. Its famous for its home-made some what potent sangría and usually busy. Average Prices/ Open nighty from 6pm -l 2am. Editorial Comment Refreshing as bars like this are practically extinct in western europe.

Le Motel at 8 passage Josset Paris 11, Telephone 01 583 08852 (nearest metro Ledru-Rollin) is best described as a music bar. It has no single genre but it has some pretty aware DJ's with a capacity to succesfully mix motown rock and indie which is no mean feat. Drinks prices are around €7 but half price in extended happy hours in the early evening. Attracts a local crowd. Open from 7pm -1.30am Tuesday - Sunday. Editorial Comment Ring in the summer to check its open as historically it closes for holidays in late July and August

Irish Pubs In Paris

Paris has quite a few Irish Pubs, the best and most authentic being the Guiness Rock Tavern at 31bis, Rue des Lombards, Telephone 01 423 32645 (nearest metro Chatelet) Open from 7pm to 6am. On a similar par The Freedom And Firkin at 8 Rue Berri Telephone 01 428 92347 (nearest metro George V). Also worth a mention is Corcorans Irish Pub 28, Rue Saint-André des Arts Telephone 01 404 69746 Open from 11am -2am.
