UEFA Draw Might Lead To Another All English Final In May

They'll be another British clash between Celtic and Manchester United. Chelsea look to have the easiest group. Arsenal and Liverpool face slightly tougher opposition. The Merseysiders must contend with Athletico Madrid and PSV, whilst the Gunners face last years quarter finalists Fenerbache and have a difficult trip to Ukraine in the offing. There are some new faces in this years Champions league. Jose Mourinhos Inter Milan have been drawn with Cypriot champions Anthorosis Famagusta. It is their first appearance in the group stages. They qualified with a a comfortable victory against Champions League regulars Olympiakos. Mourinhos former side Chelsea must also face newcomers to the competition.

The Romanian minnows cfr Cluj should stand no chance of advancing with both the blues and Roma in group A with them. Villareal pose the biggest threat to Fergies boys in group E. They finished runners up in la liga last year above giants Barcelona. This seasons so called 'Group Of Death' would have to be Group H. This pits Spanish champions Real Madrid, a champions league return for 1996 winners Juventus and the Uefa cup holders Zenit St Petersburg. Chelsea should top the group with only AS Roma posing a threat. Despite the hype of the British affair with Celtic and tricky games against Villareal, they should also qualify in top spot.

Liverpool and Arsenal will be favourites to win their groups respectively, but will have to make good starts with some respectable opposition to contend with.Finishing top is crucial as we are aware, otherwise you will pay the price of playing teams such as Inter Milan and Real Madrid.  This Should be another sintalating year in the Champions League.I wouldn't be shocked if we have another all English final in Romes stadio Olympico.

Arsenal 4-0 Fc Twente

Arsenal bounced back from the weekends disappointment to hammer Steve Mclarens Twente. Samir nasri impressed once again from the outset. The 21 year old Frenchman doubled his tally for the season when his deflected shot beat Twentes goalkeeper on 27 minutes. Arsenal began to dominate proceedings. Captain William Gallas made it 2-0 to the gunners with his second of the tie , his forward run was rewarded with a close range finish.Theo Walcott split the defence wide open and grabbed his first of the season on 66 minutes when he slotted past a helpless goalkeeper. Arsenal concluded the rout when Nicklas Bentdner tapped the ball home from five yards after a cheeky back flick from Denilson.

Bentdner will be relieved considering he was Arsenals worst player on the night. In truth it could have been more Van persie along with others missed a whole host of chances to make it more. Despite the level of opposition Arsenal needed this performance to take them into Saturdays game with Newcastle. .Chris Howe

Liverpool1-0 Standard Liege [aet]

The reds were two minutes away from having their fate decided on penalties. As in the first leg this was a poor effort from Rafa Benitez's men. There is no doubt that Liege are a stronger side than Fc Twente but Liverppol will face much tougher opponents in this years competition. The away side held their own without creating many chances. It took till the 118th minute for the deadlock to be broken. A fantastic ball from Dutchman Ryan Babel was seized upon by international colleague Dirk Kuyt who saved Liverpool from a potentially embarassing exit. The draw for the Champions league takes place today and we will have the groups as soon as they are announced at Uefa headquarters. C. Howe

Have UEFA Lost The Plot:

Moving The Goal Post Around To Find The Ball

The News that Uefa chief Sepp Blatter wanted to see every Premier league side field atleast 6 british players. Not only would these regulations contravene European employment laws but would certainly be detremental to our game. The Premiership has established itself as the most enthralling and competitive league in Europe. Not only is this demonstrated by the quality of Football seen week in week out domestically, but also in the Champions League. English sides have dominated the competition in the past two years with 3 out of the 4 semi finalists being English sides in both 2007 and 2008. I believe that this would not be the case if these rules were to come into effect. Not one english born player even made it into the top 10 of the top goalscorers chart. Stars such as Liverpools spanish ace Fernando Torres , Arsenals Togoese striker Emmanuel Adebayor and ofcourse with 31 premier league goals player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo.

Arsenal and Liverpool would be two of the teams most effected by these proposed ludicrous laws, Arsenal fielded less thean one english player on average last season with Liverpool barely managing two. How an employment law which is  blatantly illegal can even be discussed is beyond me and with Manchester United winning the Champions league they unknowingly adhered to this potential law by starting 6 English players. This indicates that the Premiership which has established itself as the most intriguing league in the world is healthier than ever, and should not be tampered with by our out of touch, past his sell by date Uefa chief Sepp Blatter.

Manchester City Bid To Play In The Leading Quartet

Manchester City are now the favourites to challenge the top four. After a summer of speculation on the future of Thaksin Shinawatra things now seem to have fallen into place for City. The Thai primeminister was facing controversy in his own country which was jeapordising the future ownership of the club. On Monday morning news broke of Arab investment in the blues. Just hours later theyhad hijacked the Robinho deal. Robinho looked to be on his way to Chelsea, but due to a fall out with Real Madrid the deal was scuppered.

The new Arbaian owners offered 32.9 million for the Brazillian forward and captured him on the stroke of the transfer deadline. Their home has been rechristened 'Middle Eastlands' after Mondays shock takeover. The owners have made their intentions clear that money is no object. There has been talk of a 130 million pound bid for Cristiano Ronaldo. They've also targeted raids on Liverpool and Arsenal for Spaniards Cesc Fabregas and Fernando Torres.

Even without the services of this trio their new side looks like it has the capabilities to challenge for a Champions League spot. The resigning of Shaun Wright-Phillips has already payed dividends. The England winger scored twice on his returning debut. ex-Hamburg player Vincent Kompany looks to  be an accomplished player who has already settled into the English game. Mark Hughes may feel that Robinho is the final piece in the puzzle, and must be thrilled at the new financial injection into the team. No doubt they will look to add to the squad during the January transfer window. It seems unlikely they will land the players who have been named by the Middle east Billionaires. One things for sure though their ambition must be music to Man Citys fans ears who will now be dreaming of genuine competition with their city rivals at Old Trafford. Chris Howe

Kevin Keegan : ''I have been left with no choice other than to leave''

The League Managers Association has confirmed that Kevin Keegan has resigned as manager of Newcastle United. He was the fifth manager at the beleagured club in four years with a tenure that last just eight months.

The announcement on Thursday followed extensive talks between the former England boss/ Liverpool Star and the Newcastle board. In a statement Kevin Keegan said he had worked desperately to find a way forward with clubs directors but "sadly that has not proved possible.'' He added "It's my opinion that a manager must have the right to manage and that clubs should not impose upon any manager any player that he does not want." The statement from Kevin Keegan ended It remains my fervent wish to see Newcastle United do well in the future and I feel incredibly sorry for the players, staff and most importantly the supporters. "I have been left with no choice other than to leave."

Keegan resignation ends several days of speculation about his future which came to head because he was unhappy about transfer decisions taken without his approval in the transfer window which closed earlier in the week. Sources close to Keegan have said that he was not able to carry out a functional role as a manager because of constraints put upon him the club owner Mike Ashley who insisted that he report to the clubs Director of football Dennis Wise.

A statement from the Newcastle club said '' it was sad and disappointed that he had resigned as over the last few days, the club has devoted itself to the discussions it has held with Kevin and as a result of those discussions they had put together a set of practical suggestions on how to move forward. The statement added: "The club made it clear to Kevin that if he had any outstanding concerns on its proposals, he should raise them with the club. "The club regrets that Kevin has, instead of taking up that offer, chosen to resign."

Keegan's reported departure on Tuesday has angered many of the clubs fans, who have a great respect for him. Whilst many had empathy with his decision they understood that it was not tenable for him to remain in the manager if his hands were tied behind his back.

On thursday night when Keegans resignation was finally confirmed around 250 supporters gathered outside the club. Many were calling for the resignations Ashley and Wise. Others were bidding for former Newcastle star Alan Shearer to become the next manager. Shearer.Alan Shearer, who a decade ago was Englands most expensive player is currently part of the BBC's Match of the Day team . In the past made no secret of the fact hat 'one day' he might consider managing Newcastle but given the turnover of managers at Newcastle it remains doubtful whether he would want to exchange the security of a BBC contract for the poisoned chalice of managing Newcastle.

Transfer Day Deadline Was So Busy

On Transfer deadline day we saw no activity from Chelsea or Arsenal. Due to Chelsea and Robinhos handling of the situation he has now ended up making a shock 32.9 million move to Manchester City. Dimitar Berbatov finally made his dream move after months of speculation to Manchester United for  30.75 million pounds.

Rafa Benitez was also busy on deadline day securing the services of Espanyol winger Albert Riera for a fee reported to be 8 million pounds. He also bolstered his attacking options by capturing 18 year old Brazillian striker Vtora.

Arab Investment Group Buy Man City

Manchester City have been bought by the Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and Development Limited claimed to have taken over City. The previous owner Thaksin Shinawatra is thought to have retained an interest in the club. The sale has not been officially confirmed by Manchester city.

Weekend Match Reports:

Chelsea Stumble As Spurs Share Points

Tottenham left Stamford Bridge with a well deserved point after their 1-1 draw with Chelsea. Brazillian Juliano Belletti scored from Decos corner to give the blues an early lead. Darren Bent struck back for Spurs on the stroke of half time after capatalising on a Chelsea error.

Neither team managed to carve out any clear cut chances in the second half. If anyone should have won it was the north Londoners with some good posession. Juande Ramos will leave the happier of the two managers, and hopefully it will give his team the confidence to kickstart this season. Many thought Chelsea had the league sown up with their great start, but Scolari will feel there's work to do after this poor display. Chris Howe

Liverpool Pay Price For Lack Lustre Play

Liverpool may have won this game had it not been for negative tactical decisions made by Rafael Benitez. Liverpool suffered without the services of Captain marvel Steven Gerrard. They experienced a further blow when Fernando Torres was withdrawn in the first half due to a hamstring injury. Aston Villa created the best opportunity of the match when  Norwegian striker John Carew was denied by reds keeper Pepe Reina. Benitez left Ryan Babel on the bench for the entirety of the game. This was despite Liverpools lack of attacking options. Liverpool showed defensive quality as usual, without penetrating a suspect Villa defence. The game was fairly dire on the whole. 0-0 was probably a fair result for both teams. CH

Vantastic Gunners Sink Poor Newcastle Side

A Robin Van Persie brace secured an impressive 3-0 Arsenal victory. Wengers team dominated an under strength Newcastle outfit from the first whistle to the last. Captain William Gallas was guilty of missing a sitter early on. The Frenchman fired over the bar from point blank range from a Bacary Sagna flick on. After having a penalty appeal turned down, the Reds were then gifted with an equaliser when Habib Beye handled an Adebayor cross. Dutchman Robin Van Persie stepped up with a great penalty to give the home side a 1-0 lead.  Van Persie made it 2-0 when he powered home from  Emanuelle Eboues cheeky back heel on 41 minutes.

Brazillian youngster Denilson capped off a strong performance with a deflected goal to seal the magpies fate. The return of the influential Cesc Fabregas made a huge difference for the North London giants. They played the free flowing football we've come to expect from them. From Newcastles point of view they were missing several key players. Had the likes of Mark Viduka, Obafemi Martins and Damien Duff been available they may have proved a sterner test for Arsenal. The Gunners will certainly face tougher challenges than this, but it will do their confidence the world of good. Chris Howe

A Boy From Brazil Chelsea' s New Manager

Luiz Fellipe Scolari comes to Chelsea with a big reputation. He is one of the few coaches alive to have led a side to world cup glory. The outstanding Brazil team of 2002 made Scolari a Brazillian hero. Here are some key facts about Chelseas latest acquisition.

Luiz Fellipe Scolari was born in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande Brazil November 9th 1948.  He has an illustrious managerial career, having coached in Kuwait, Japan and his native Brazil. He guided Brazillian side Palmerias to five consecutive championships. Scolari was voted South American coach of the year for 1999. During his playing days he was a hard hitting defender who played in the middle east and Juventude in Brazil. He retired from playing in 1982 and went directly into management. His nickname is 'Big Phil' which represents his hard, strong personality. He managed Brazil for just one year between 2001 and 2002. Big Phil took over as Portugal boss in 2003 and quit after Euro 2008.

During his reign Portugal got to the Euro 2004 final and finished fourth in World Cup 2006. He was an England target for some time. Englands mistake was pursuing him so close to the World cup in Germany. England missed out on his services and had to settle for the incompetent gingernut Steve Mclaren. Scolari is a different prospect to the quieter Avram Grant. Like Jose Mourinho he is outspoken. Scolari may not be as arrogant as the 'Special One' but he's even tougher. He is just months from his 60th birthday but seems just as charistmatic and hungry as he ever was.

He's the kind of character Chelsea were after to replace Grant. The demands are simple, win a big trophy or you're gone. Grant came so close to winning Chelsea their first ever Champions league. Had it not been for a John Terry slip they would have won. It's a harsh fine line, but I'm sure the Brazillian bulldog is aware of the Blues expectations. Hes seems undaunted by the skeptical English press, and no doubt there will be many intriguing tussels to come. Interesting confrontations with Mr. Ferguson and Wenger await us. I believe that Roman Abramovich has made the right decision and Luiz Fellipe Scolari may well be the man to take Chelsea back to the domestic dominance of 2,3 years ago. One things for sure though Scolari like his predecessor cannot afford to finish the season empty handed. Chris Howe

Man United are bigger than anyone

Ronaldo established himself as the best player in the world last season. Though I personally believe that if Ronaldinho was at his best he would be the best in the world. Forget potential or ability he was definitely the most productive player in the universe last year. Now that Euro 2008 is finished Man United fans across the globe are desperate to hear Ronaldo utter those sweet words'I'm staying'. It is unlike Sir Alex Ferguson to hold on to a player who wants to leave. The Portugeese winger has been quoted as saying that the move to Real Madrid would be a dream. If they were to relinquish Mr Ronaldo , one would think they would need to replace the 41 goals he scored last term. Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez both notched up a good tally of goals, but neither were as prolific as their 23 year old team mate.

United have recovered from losing big names in the past. Just two seasons ago Dutch goalscoring machine Ruud Van Nistlerooy left. A year after him leaving United claimed their first league title for four years. Last season they did the double winning both the Champions league and premiership titles. When King Eric left in 1997 , they went on to complete a historic domestic treble just two years later. Manchester United are a great club and are bigger than just one player.

There's no doubt he'll need to be replaced if he does exit old Trafford. There was talk of Hollands Wesley Sneijder going the other way. Sneijder is maybe second in the world to Ronaldo in that position and would be a great replacement. Despite all the debate, Ronaldo has yet to leave. Maybe he will remain at United.

If Ronaldo does pledge his loyalty there is no doubt he can leave a legacy the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, George Bests and Eric Cantonas. Why would you wanna leave the club which won the biggest tournament in club football a weeks ago. However this fascinating saga unfolds, Manchester United will go on with or without Cristiano Ronaldo. Chris Howe
