Club History & Facts:
Hertha Berlin were formed in the German capital in 1892, the name Hertha derives from Nerthus the goddess of fertility in Germanic mythology. Hertha play in blue and white at home and all white away from home. They play their football at the Olympic stadium in Berlin, the grounds capacity is approxiamately 74,500 and was the site of the 2006 fifa world cup final. The team share the nickname 'The Old Lady' with Italian side Juventus.
Hertha originally played in Berlin's oberliga before a national league was created later on, they won the Oberliga 8 times between the years of 1925 and 1933 only missing out once in 1932. During World war II most German Orginizations were banned , but in late 1949 they reclaimed their identity as Hertha Berlin BSC. In 1963 the german national league the Bundesliga was established and Hertha joined from the Oberliga to face sides from all over Germany including the likes of Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen.
European Performance:
Hertha have been in the shadows of Bayern Munich for along period of time, but have been involved in European competition. Their best achievement was a Uefa semi-final appearance against fellow German side Borrusia Munchengladbach in 1979. They have also appeared in the Uefa cup a few times over recent years without progressing to the latter stages of the competition. in the 2004/2005 season they finished in 4th place and won that years Intertoto cup to compete in Europe.
The present side included Liverpool's on loan striker Andriy Voronin and captain Arne Friedrich finished last season in 10th place. Switzerland's Lucine Favre is the club's manager and the team are in good shape as they lie 2nd in the Bundesliga.
