Budapest Overview
Budapest is first documentated as the Roman town of Aquincum which was founded in AD89 near an an old Celtic settlement. in an area which for the following four centuries was known as Obuda. The word Pest (meaning sentry point) is thought to have Turkish origins and referred to another settlement that dates back to Roman times - but this definition is sometimes disputed. In the 9th century the Slavs settled in the area along with the Maygars from Central Asia. Most historians cite this migration as being the ancestral foundation of the Hungarys culture and language.
In 1241 Pest was briefly invaded and destroyed by Mongol invaders. The town was quickly rebuilt but it was in Buda, six years later, that the Royal castle was built. In 1361 Buda became the capital of Hungary. Buda and Pest where both invaded by armies of the Ottoman Empire in 1541. During the occupation both towns (especially Pest) saw a decline in population and industry. The cities were recaptured in 1686 by the Austrias Habsburg rulers. In the following two centuries Pest grew rapidly. By the 19th century its population was larger than that of Buda and nearby Obuda combined. In the nineteenth century Pests population increased twenty fold four times greater than the other two towns. In 1849 the three town were for a short time incorporated under a single administration by a new revolutionary.Hungarian Regime. The incoporation was revoked when the Habsburgs regained power, but then reintroduced in 1867 by Hungarys Government in 1867.
At the end of WW1 Budapest remained Hungarys capital but two thirds of the country's land had been lost. Budapest though continued to grow and by 1930 greater Budapest had 1.4 million residents. In 1944 some parts of Budapest were destroyed by British and American air raids. Further serious damage occured during a 50 day siege of the city which began on December 24th as German troops stood their ground against the advancing Red Army. During this battle nearly 40,000 civilians were killed on top of the 100,000 Jews who had been slaughtered by the Nazis in the previous year.
At the end of the WW2 the Red Army installed a communist government. In the following decade Budapest was rebuilt. In 1956 the people of Budapest tried to free themselves from the rule of Communism but the October 'Hungarian Uprising' was brutally quoshed on Nov 4th. Since the fall of communism in 1989 Hungary has prospered and in 2004 it became a EU Member State. Perhaps the most striking thing about Budapest is that the people are very proud about being Hungarian but at the same time happy to be Europeans.
Restaurants In Budapest
Budapest is rich in restaurants which are often found in old and very bueatiful buildings and decorated with heavy curtains. Many, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays feature small classical quartets that add a great ambience to the whole dining experience. Sometimes these muscians suddenly come into the restaurant and you can find yourself surrounded by a mini orchestra willing to play anything you care to name. And if you don't suggest something they will assume you are in love, which can be a little awrkward if your out with your ex to celebrate your divorce.
One of Budapests most intriquing restaurants is The Vista Travel Cafe at Paulay Ede utca 7 in district 7 (Tel: 268 0888). This is high class cafe which is frequented by backpackers and professional Hungarians who hold business lunches there. It also serves as a cybercafe and an information centre. The food is good though it can take a while to arrive. It also states on the menu that the kitchen staff can be a little exciteable so sometimes the wait is interestng. Next stop Fawlty Towers! A more sedate cafe is The Cafe Kor at Sas utca 17 in disrict 5 (Tel: 311 0053). This contenental Bistro serves good lunches and dinners. It dates back to the end of the 19th century and it has many wooden features that celebrate its longlitivety including paintings from the day it opened. It also a large gyspy band who add to the atmosphere. It is one of Hungarys oldest restaurants. The food is good. but not exceptional but the ambience is rare. Booking is essential. The Nancsi Neni at Ordogarok ut 80 in district 111 serves traditional Hungarian food in a very relaxed rustic enviroment. In the summer you can also eat in the garden. It serves especially good turkey dishes and booking is essential. Reports recently suggest the service icould be better.
The Kisbuda Gyongye at Kenyeres utca 34 in district 111 ( Tel: 368 6402), is a Hungarian restaurant very famous for its game and meat dishes. A very intimate restaurant with a very able pianist. The Baraka at Magyar utca 12 in district V (Tel: 483 1355) is a modern establishment selling contemporary Hungarian food laced with a touch of French and Eastern seasoning. The menu includes saddle of lamb with an orange sauce and duck breast in a ginger apple and soya sauce ! The food may be a little unorthodox but it is certainly good and the desserts that compliment it will satisfy the most discerning patron - particularly the chocolate ones. Booking essential.

This flame, which permamently burns outside The Parliament Building was lit on the 40th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Uprising, It is a symbolic trubute to those who died including the then Hungarian President Imre Nagy -who's statue stands near by. The Parliament Building at Kossuth Lajos Ter 3 in district v, in some respects is strikingly similar to The Palace of WestMinster in London. It was built before WW1 and is exudes power and imperialism. At night it is floodlit and even more impressive - especially if viewed from the Bude on the other side of The Danube. Only part of it now functions as a government building. It opens daily from 10 - 2pm and provided The Parliament is not sitting you can join a guided tour.
Close by is The Statue of Attila Josef a Hungarian Poet born in 1905 who at the age of 32, severely depressed, through himself in front of a train. On the Bude side of The Danube is The Castle District. It includes The Matyas Church and the ruins of The Dominican Monastery. This area is very up and best accessed via The Cable Lift by The Elizabeth Bridge. This ride and The Castle District offer the most amazing view of The Danube and Budapest especially at night.
The focal point In The Castle District is The Royal Palace at the top of Castle Hill. Since the 13th century there have been several palaces here all of which have been destroyed in various wars. The present palace was rebuilt during the 60s & 70s having been nearly totally destroyed in fighting between the Russians and German at the end of WW2. Budapest became the a city and the capital of Hungary in 187. Before that it was three small towns, not two as many people believe. These places were Pest, Buda and Obduda. The latters translates as OIld Buda.
Crime and Personal Safety & Security In Budapest
Some bars and clubs, especially those in district v - the business area in central Pest add surcharges to the bills which can run into 100s of euros. If not settled security guards will escorts victims to an ATM. Restaurants and bars with unclear prices on the menu also operate in this way. Be warned that some taxis drivers are involved in these scams and will encourage tourists to go to these places. In Budapest especially in markets and on public transport there is a risk of pick pocketing or bag snatching.
The Best Of Budapest
After sunset on chilly November evening two euromost researchers decide to walk along St Margaret Island (image above) which is 2 klm island between the banks of the Danube. Access to the island is by one of two three pronged bridges at either of the island. It was very quiet as they walked down the road from the bridge. Nearby bars where closed - the island was asleep.
They walked into the hal- lit park at the foot of the slip road ignoring other visitors to the park who were mostly couples even though they were puzzled as to why they were standing around peering into the darkness. Suddenly the stillness of the night was broken when ahead a previously motionless and invisible fountain sprung into life. At the same time floodlights lit up the fountain which danced in time to the sounds of a Hungarian Waltz which suddenly could be heard from speakers hidden some where in surrounding trees.
This unexpected display of the virtues of light, water and music lasted about five minutes. As the fountain fell away, the floodlights faded and the music was replaced with the silence of the night our researchers assimilated with locals and peered into the darkness waiting for the encore. When in Rome do as the Romans do !
The island also has a zoo which though small is ideal for young children. In the summer there is a small amusement park and two public swimming pools. This is all set in a park heavily populated by trees, a Franciscan Church and the ruins of St Margarets Dominican Nunnery. There is no other city in the world with an enviroment or atmosphere like this in it's heart. Seriously Budapest at its best.

And there's Guiness to!
Every city in Eastern Europe appears to have an Irish Bar and Budapest is no exception. Becketts is one of the better ones, it is not small like many of its cousins but its very lively at the weekends. The food is exceptionally good and english is spoken by all the Hungarian staff - curiously they have Irish accents. The Guiness never runs out - or so they say!
