Clubbing & Nightlife In Europe

Warnings

Clubbing in europe is very diverse and in different cities the word club can have different meanings. Not all clubs are about 'partying' and clubs that primarily target the tourists with flyers may not be the best places to go if your simply looking for good music and atmosphere.

If you don't you could find yourself in a pole dancing club (Riga and Prague immediately spring to mind) and if your English speaking attitudes to towards you may not be very friendly because in these types of clubs the english have a reputation for bad behaviour. These clubs are rarely about music.

All over europe there are supposed nightclubs which are a front for prostitution or casino gambling sometimes both. These types of clubs seem to be prevalent in Bucharest Kiev and Moscow but not solely. Again these clubs are not renowned for their sounds.

So if your looking for music as opposed to getting laid a good move is to try and find out where the locals go. A word of caution here many as people will flag down a taxis and ask the driver to take them to a good club. This is not always a good idea particularly as in some cities taxis drivers get commission from the clubs they drop people off at. We are aware of this happening in Amsterdam Prague and Riga to a limited extent however it is a very common in Budapest and a recipe for getting seriously rinsed:

So called nightclubs in Budapest recommended by local taxis drivers frequently pay the drivers a commission not just for taking you there but also a percentage of what you spend. Consequently the drivers will do their level best to drop you off at these clubs. If you ask them to take you to a specific club they may say your club is no good, very expensive or closed and then suggest one of these joints.

If you fall for the scam one inside the club you will be charged some of the highest prices in europe.for your drinks to cover ex's like the commissions to the taxis drivers You need to especially aware of clubs where they add your drinks to a tag or bill which when you leave will include ghost rounds. Asking to see the manager, refusing to pay or not having the money to pay is not an option in these situations. The protocol here is for you to be press-ganged or forcibly marched to the nearest atm cash machine by a very well built disagreeable and impatient 'security' guard. After all this you then have the problem of getting home - you could get a taxis but perhaps that not a good way to startd or end a night out clubbing.

The Good News

Amsterdam has a well organized club scene good music ( possibly because the sex tourist is catered for separately in the Red Light District ) with many of the clubs have a strict dress code and a reputation for employing with decent professional security staff. Similar comments also apply to clubs in Berlin. Skopje in Macedonia is not short of good clubs though the opening hours are restricted.and the clubbing in Sofia is showing great promise.

Prague undoubtedly is one of Europe's best cities from a clubbing perspective with some excellent specialist clubs in and outside the city centre with many fairly priced.

The prize for the city with friendliest ambience and good music in its clubs goes to Belgrade in Serbia - . the locals in Belgrade seem to love tourists which always helps.

Jazz enthusiasts are well catered for in Tirana (Albania) Berlin and Prague house and techno fans will appreciate Bratislava, Ljubljana, Slovenia, and the Baltic cities of Estonia Riga and Tallinn. Oh and live bands and concerts are common place in Paris.
