Threat Of International (Al-Qaeda) Terrorism In Europe

Most European countries carry a risk of experiencing an act of terrorism which is defined by the British Authorities under the following categories:
  • suicide operations
  • hijackings
  • bombings
  • kidnappings
  • shootings
  • attacks on commercial aircraft and ships
  • use of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear materials.

Since the mililary invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq the risk and occurence of such attacks has increased. These attacks are often attributed to Al-Qaeda or groups of indigenious people in certain countries (such as the London Bombings in 2006) who are sympathetic to Al Queda. These indigenious people may have links to Al-Qaeda or operate totally independently. There is some evidence to suggest that the home grown terrorist is often motivated by the fact that he or she feels that the country he or she lives is anti Islamic because of its association and involvements in the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq or its continued involvement in their occupation. It is therefore reasonable to assume that as long as these occupations continue the terrorist threat will remain.

European countries which have had a high profile in the Bush 'War on Terror' campaign such as the United Kingdom and Spain have experienced terrorist attacks and the threat in these countries remains high. However the threat of terrorism in other European countries should not be under estimated as the majority of countries in Europe have to some extent made contributions to the wars in Afganistan and Iraq. Contrary to most laymens view the number of countries actively involved in these wars is not limited to a handful of close allies of America - most Nato countries have provided troops to coalition forces in Afghanistan.

Accurately assessing the level of risk of a terrorist in an individual country is not an appraisal that euromost is qualified to make. However following bombings in London and Madrid who's governments were high profile players in the 'War on Terror' one consideration is that the greater a nations contribution to this campaign the higher the risk of their experiencing a terrorist attack. Other countries such as Denmark where a newspaper published anti Islamic cartoons in 2008 may also carry an enhanced risk of terrorism.

Euromost has decided to publish the details of European countries involvement in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq below so as to inform visitors to these countries that there is a risk of terrorism there. Beneath these details are additional sources of official information that visitors may refer to before making plans to visit these countries or check for the latest advice on before departing.
