Erfurt History (continued from above)
During both world wars Erfurt one of the few German cities that suffered only minor damage. It was rarely targeted in air raids by the Allies. As a result it has several buildings that date back to Medieval times.
Most of these buildings can be found in Altstadtit - the Old Townstill which is a maze of cobblestobe alleys ordained with historic houses, quite a few bridges and churches with high spires. Many of the buildings have very well preserved Baroque and Renaissance facades. It is very easy to spend several hours wandering aimlessly around appreciating this unspoiled quarter.
Every summer, between March and September the city hosts in Cyriaksburg Park one of Europes largest horticultural called the International Gartenbauaustellung, is held here in the Cyriaksburg Park every year from the end of March to September. Not surpisingly Erfurt is often referred to as the city of flowers and towers.
