2.7% Rise In Passenger Traffic
Nearly 2.5 million passengers travelled through Gatwick Airport last month, an increase of 2.7% on December 2006. Healthy growth in the Irish, European and North Atlantic markets helped to achieve greater numbers. There was a 19.7% boost in passengers travelling to and from the Republic of Ireland, an 11.7% rise in North Atlantic passengers & the European scheduled traffic expanded 5.8%.
Andy Flower, Managing Director, said: “During 2007 we worked hard to recruit more security officers and increase the number of search lanes at Gatwick. I am pleased this is paying dividends and the successful Christmas period took Gatwick Airport to over 35 million visitors a year.”
London Heathrow Newsbite: New Heathrow Transit System
BAA, as part of its plan to modernise Heathrow Airport, has started work on phase one of the world’s first Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) System. This unique system will revolutionise the way visitors are transported around the airport.Developed by ATS Ltd and BAA, the system will consist of a fleet of 18 low energy, battery powered, driverless vehicles capable of carrying around four passengers and their luggage along a dedicated guide way.
The system will provide g a quick and comfortable service, with near to no waiting at station. BAA has worked with ATS to customise the PRT system to meet the unique needs of the worlds busiest international airport.

Uttlesford District Council has granted planning permission to BAA Stansted for a state of the art facility that will include a lecture theatre, parking for up to 20 vehicles and a coach bay for organised trips.It will open up the exciting and interesting world of airport operations to those who want to learn more about Stansted and hear more about the scale and scope of what happens at the airport. BAA’s community manager, Valda Edmunds. “Stansted Airport is an integral part of the community, and the centre will be an important place for local people and aviation enthusiasts to meet. “Iit offer stunning views across the airfield but it will act as an education resource for displays and activities for visiting school trips and community groups".

Passenger numbers at London City Airport reached a record high in 2007 with over 2.9 million people travelling to and from the only central London airport This figures were 23% up on 2006. Richard Gooding Chief Executive of LCT said: "the airport had a great 2007 due to the airports convenient location, combined with fast check-in and arrival processing times, appeals to time-poor business travellers. There is no doubt that passengers all across London and the South East are waking up to the options offered by this airport; not least the attractive five minutes taken to exit the terminal from the steps of the aircraft'. The Docklands Light Railway services with its links to the London Underground Network is also an important factor in the airports success - it is used by over 50 per cent of airport passengers.
