SK Rapid Vienna Football Club
Club History & Facts:
Sk Rapid Vienna were established at the end of the 19th century in 1899 in the Austrian capital. The Rapid squad is known as the green-whites. Rapid were dominant in the early 20th century between the two world wars.
The manager of todays side is Peter Paulcut and their stadium holds a misely 18,000 people. Vienna won the German Championship in 1941 overcoming the top side at the time, Schalke 04. Rapid became renowned for being great athletes hence the nickname Rapidgeist which translates as Rapid Sprint.
They are by far the most popular side in Austria, but cannot compete with the investment that rivals Red Bull Salzburg, Rapid are attempting to compensate for this problem by the development of young and gifted footballers. They reached the 1985 Cup winners cup final only to lose to the English champions at that time, Everton. They've won the Austrian Championship an incredible 32 times, their last triumph was in 2008, but they could only finish runners up in 2009.
European Performance
They last reached the Champions League in 2005, but were demolished in the group stages by far stronger opponents. Rapid have also won an impressive 14 Austrian cups, a competition they won 4 out of 5 years in the 1980's.
They are in this years Europa League after defeating Aston Villla on away goals in what would be considered an upset. Current stars include captain Steffen Hoffman and top striker Christopher Drazan.
