Club History & Facts:
Liverpool Fc were founded in 1892 by John Houlding and their home ground is Anfield in Liverpool a ground they shared with local rivals Everton until Everton were forced out due to the high rent fees. Anfield's attendance is 45,000 and their fans are notorious for their dedicated support particulary the infamous 'KOP' stand which has been like a 12th man for the team inspiring Liverpool to many great victories.
The reds experienced limited success before the appointment of the legendary Scotsman Bill Shankly in 1959. Shankly guided to them to first division champioship winners in the 1960's and began Liverpool's tradition of trophy winning.
1989 saw 96 Liverpool supporters were killed in the Hillsborough disaster. Liverpool were playing Nottingham Forest in an Fa Cup semi-final and the fans were crushed to death in one of the most emotional moments in Football history.
Liverpool won the league a year later in 1990, it was their record 18th domestic top flight trophy and they havent won it since. the 1990's was a strange decade for the club in which they experienced a period in the wilderness they managed to win the fa cup in 1992 and league cup in 1995, but the standards had slipped quite dramatically and the side had been eclipsed by the success of Manchester United who were the new kings in English football.
Liverpooll came the closest they've come to a League Championship in 19 years finishing 4 points behind eventual winners Man United. Despite a poor start to this season they remain among the title favourites for the 2009/2010 season.
European Performance:
They amazingly managed to win 4 european cups between the years of 1977 and 1984. Legends such as hardman Graeme Souness, Phil Neal and Alan Hansen featured in thois club's phenomenal period of success. for many yeras in the 70's and 80's the Merseysiders were regarded as the best side in the world.
Liverpool had a bittersweet 1980's despite the European cup and domestic dominance they also had tragedy to contend with the first coming in 1985 when the Heysel disaster struck, 39 Juventus fans died when a wall collapsed before they were defeated by the Italians in that year's european cup final.
In 2005 Liverpool shocked the world with a memorable comeback against Ac Milan in Istabul's 2005 Champions League final. Rafa Benitez's side were 3-0 down at half time and looked dead and buried. Captain fantastic Steven Gerrard drove the incredible fightback, they drew 3-3 and beat a deflated Milan on penalties to win their first European cup in 21 years.
The current side is managed by Rafa Benitez and star players include Captain Steven Gerrard and Spain striker Fernando Torres Chelsea knocked the reds out in this years quarter final, the rmerseysiders found themselves with too much to do after a horror show at Anfield in the first leg.Profile by Chris Howe.
