Club History & Facts:
Bayern Munich were formed in 1900 by Franz John and ten other footballers. They play at the Allianz arena in Munich which has a capacity of 70,000 people. Their local rivals are 1860 Munich who were immensely successful in the 1960's. One of their more popular nicknames is Die Bayern which translates as the Bavarians. They are the most successful side in German History with 21 national titles to their illustrious name.
The team of the 1970's was the most legendary , and was led by their president, the iconic Franz Beckenbauer who led them to an amazing three consecutive European cups between 74 and 76. Their most recent European victory was the 2001 champions League win over Spanish outfit Valencia, which would have healed the wounds of the dramatic last minute defeat to Manchester United in Barcelona's 1999 final.
Many great names have worn the Bayern shirt such as ex coach Jurgen Klinsmann and current chairman, the prolific striker Karl Heinz-Rummenigge. They are the current German champions and their first league crown came in 1932, but they had to wait till 1968 to win their next one after they joined the Bundesliga 6 years after its inception.
There current club colours are red and white, current stars include highly rated Frenchman Franck Ribery and young German winger Bastian Schweinsteiger. They have consistently won the Bundesliga since 1968 they have won it on average once every two seasons, a phenomenally dominant record.
European Performance
They have failed to go further than the quarter finals of the Champions League since their triumph almost 8 years ago. Munich were domiated by Barcelona over two legs in this years quarter final, beaten an incredible 8-2 on aggregate. Not good enogh for the powers that be at Munich, Jurgen Klinnsman was out on his ear.
was also the upset of finishing below new champions Wolfsburg, but Bayern have manged to hold on to all their top talent and will believe they can mount a challenge for silverware on all fronts this campaign.
