Inter Milan Football Club
Italian Name: Internaziole Milano
Club History & Facts:
Internaziole Milano known in english as Inter Milan were founded in 1908. They were formed by a mixture of Swiss and Italians in Lombardy, Milan. They were created because their founders were unhappy about the domination of Ac Milan. They play in blue and black stripes hence the nickname Nerazzuri[the black-blues] .
They share the San Siro stadium with arch enemies Ac Milan, which has a capacity of just over 80,000. The club president is Massimo Morati and their current manager is the controversial Jose' Mourinho.
Inter have won an impressive 25 domestic trophies in their 100 year history. The Nerazzuri have won a phenomenal 16 serie A titles and 5 coppa Italias. Milan won their first serie A title in 1910 just two years after their invention and are the only side to have remained in the top division for their entire history.Their most recent Coppa Italia win was in 2006 and They've won the past three Serie A titles in what has been entitled the resurrection of this great club.
Their golden era came in the 50's and 60's when they went under the moniker of 'La Grande Inter', during this period along with many scudetto wins they won the Champions League two years in a row.
European Performance:
In 1964 they defeated Real Madrid and Benfica the following year thanks to the brilliant Brazillian striker Da Costa. Inter have also won the Uefa cup on three ocassions all in the 1990's, between 1991 and 1998, a comfort to their fans whilst their domestic form was dwindling. They went 17 painful years without a league title, in which time they played in the shadows of their Milan neighbours and the Turin giants Juventus.
The last side before 2006 boasted the German pair of Lothar Matthaius and Andy Brehme, They claimed the 2006 Scudetto by default when Juventus were caught in a match fixing scandal which saw 2nd placed Inter secure a long awaited Serie A trophy.
The current side is on course to win their fourth championship on the bounce and current stars include Swedish strker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and their Argentinian captain, club legend Javier Zanetti. Despite their recent domestic dominance they have still failed to rediscover their magic touch in Europe.
This was a major factor for the signing of new boss Mourinho who has a mouthwatering clash with Manchester United in the champions league just days away. Inter walked to their 4 th straight Scudetto without a real challenge from Italies othe rtop sides. In the Champions League it was a different story where they failed again in the 2nd round with a poor showing which would have upset boss Jose Mourinho.
The acquistion of Samuel Eto'o in the summer 2009 may give them the edge in this year's competition as the Cameroonian striker has proved his pedigree in the competition.
