French Riveria & Spain Hit By Snow As Winter ContinuesMany parts of France Spain especially Catolona were once again buried in heavy snow early this week as the worst winter for 25 years refused to loosen its icy grip. Even on the normally mild French Riveria four to five inches of snow settled on the dry sand on beaches.

UK Child Murderer Is Found Guilty By The Media
Iceland Left Out In The Cold After Debt Referendum Vote
Bulger Murder:: In 1993 two ten year old boys were found guilty of abducting a two year old boy from a Liverpool shopping centre and then battering him to death on a railway line. The calculated brutality of this crime was reported around the world. In 2001 the boys aged 17 were released with new identities from a life sentence on a conditional licence which meant that either could be returned to prison if they breached the terms of the licence. On February 22 one of the boys ( formerly Jon Venables) was arrested for such a breach and returned to prison. Since then the British media and the mother of the murdered child have demanded that the UK authorities explain the reason for the arrest. Some media sources have suggested that the reason is due to a sexual or porn related offence. These reports undermine the reasons for the arrest - and any due process that follows
Whilst there are arguments as to whether these two murderers should have been ever released, or released only seven years after committing the crime especially at an age when their testerone levels would be high - neither the media or the mother have the right to try 'Venables' in a media circus. To do so is to break the fundamental principle of English law that a person is innocent until proven guilty. That can only by determined by a jury who are not prejudiced by summary media justice before the trial. That principle has to apply to the everyone in a society irrespective of their past or senility and if we make any exceptions to this we might as well send people to Guantanamo Bay. That said it is also difficult to see how this media coverage is supportive to the Bulger family given that their bereavement is something that they will at best cope with and not ever get over. Let them grieve in private.
Icesave Reimbursement: On 6th March a referendum in Iceland rejected proposals put to the Iceland Government by Britain and the Netherlands to repay the respective counties the money that the governments had paid to its nationals when they lost their money when the Icesave bank collapsed in 2008. Iceland has a population of around 309,000 (see the Iceland country profile) and obviously not all are eligible to vote. but in a turnout of 62.7% an overwhelming 93.9% rejected the terms. The Netherlands has indicated that this rejection could adversely affect Iceland's application to join the EU and the British expect talks to continue. Understandably both countries would like to get their money back (which together total €3.8bn) but as this equates to around €45,000 per household the proposed 15 year repayment term for such a small nation seems very harsh and hardly european.
Reparations and blackmail did not work in Europe post WW1 and one does not have to be a rocket scientist to work out that accelerating Iceland's admission to the EU rather than postponing it might empower the country's economic recovery and its capacity to repay the debt. Anyway with government owned loss-making British banks paying the equivalent to Iceland's debt in bonuses to its staff kicking the Icelanders when they are down could be viewed simply disgraceful political engineering.

Travel Dangers And Personal Safety In European Countries And Cities
Though tourist boards and travel companies promote the merits of the travel destinations they serve because they want your money they rarely tell about the downside of where you are thinking of going.
Every country or city has its problems when it comes to personal safety and crime and because as a tourist or visitors you are not familiar with the area you are susceptible to being the target of petty criminals. Euromost city guides highlight the main problems and dangers faced by visitors to a city.
The European 'Dangers Index' contains general advice on personal safety for women travelling to Europe. The index also details the contributions made by individual countries in Europe to the wars Afghanistan and Iraq.
This data suggests that most countries in Europe are to some degree liable to a terrorist attack. Historically there is an indication that the greater the involvement a countrys involvement in these wars the more likely it is to experience terrorism.
The index also identifies countries were local terrorist groups or indigemous freedom fighters may be active such as in Russia. The European Dangers index also identifies areas such as the Balkans where former wars have left a legacy of landmines Dangers Index
Non - Eurozone Cities Offering Exceptional Value
Whilst many European countries are on the path to an economic recovery the indications are that the fortunes of the British economy are uncertain. Consequently travellers from the UK are faced with £ - € exchange rates only slightly better than at the beginning of 2009.
Though reduced hotel prices across europe have partly offset the cost of European trips for UK travellers (particularly in cities like Amsterdam and Paris) destinations outside the Eurozone generally offer better value. Accommodation prices in Budapest Hungary and Kiev the Ukraine are very competitive at the moment particularly if you prepared to negotiate with the hotelier or agency.
Other cities offering good value Dubrovnik Croatia, Gdansk & Krakow Poland, Tallinn Estonia, Prague Czech Republic, Budapest Hungary, Vilnius Lithuania, Riga Latvia.
