Things To Consider When Booking A European Holiday
Until a couple of years ago it was relatively easy to get a substantially discounted package holiday to most beach destinations at anytime of the year. However by 2010 many of the larger holiday companies had reduced the number of holidays available and the number of late bookings on the market fell sharply.
This year the demand for package holidays appears to be significantly higher than last year and late booking holidays at heavily discounted rates may be even more difficult to find. Allowing for the increased demand during school holidays the first three weeks in May, the last two weeks in September and first two weeks on October may be the best times to find a real bargain in reasonable weather.
However even at these times there is no guarantee that you will be spoilt for choice as it is possible that many of those people who have previously opted for booking their own holidays independently by booking flights and accommodation separately seek the security of a package holiday after witnessing the chaos at airports due to volcanic ash and snow.
On the other hand those that do go it alone may well find that hotel accommodation in places like Greece Ireland Portugal and Spain is the lowest it has been for several year - particularly away from the coasts. As these countries are the weakest links in the euro zone they have suffered severely during the economic downturn. As a consequence the austerity measures introduced to balance their finances have caused significant industrial unrest particularly in Greece and Spain where strikes often affecting air travel are common place.
The problems of the euro zone may not be as enduring as some analysts would have us believe though 'speculators' on the financial markets seem intent to 'trash' the weaker members of it for their own financial gain. However, that said, it would be foolish not to consider countries outside the euro zone where exchange rates are less volatile - city breaks in landlocked Hungary and the Czech Republic or a holiday combining Prague and Budapest the two are worthy of consideration. see also central europe coach holidays . whilst beach holidays in Bulgaria and Croatia (particularly Dubrovnik) are other alternatives. Please see the European Country Profiles (Link) to identify the currency in individual countries
Which Cities in Europe To Go?
For those people who are not into beach holidays europe is awash with cities to visit. Accommodation in Amsterdam and Paris is now cheaper than it was two years ago and both cities seem to have become more popular recently and there is definitely more to see in Amsterdam than the Amsterdam Red Light District. Accommodation prices in Budapest Hungary and Kiev the Ukraine are very competitive at the moment particularly if you prepared to negotiate with the hotelier or agency.
Cities to note are Dubrovnik on the Croatian coastline with the Aegean sea which is one of the most naturally beautiful places in Europe - George Bernard Shaw described it as 'Heaven on earth'.. Prague in the Czech Republic is arguably the most architecturally beautiful city in Europe - so much so that when Hitler invaded it he ordered that no buildings should be destroyed. Krakow in Poland and it's former capital is in some ways a mini version of Prague and probably europe's most friendly city -so much so they are even nice to you at the airport.. All three cities have an abundance of good apartments to rent on a short term basis at a fraction of hotel prices.
Gdansk in Poland on the Baltic coast is refreshing and steeped in History Tallinn in Estonia, is a curious mix of historic buildings and very child friendly. Budapest in Hungary is one of those cities which it is a joy to chill out in (rather like Barcelona) it has a fascinating if not complicated history but is very forward thinking - in Budapest at least Hungarians are proud of their national identity but happy to be part of Europe.
Berlin in Germany has a long history but was famously portrayed during the cold war as the city where the democratic west stood up against Stalin with the Berlin Wall the symbol of this adventure. However after a visit to this city you may question whether this is an accurate representation of events especially as the western sector was surrounded by communist forces. Little remains of the original wall but what does will make you think.

Dangers & Personal Safety In European Countries & Cities
Though tourist boards and travel companies promote the merits of the travel destinations they serve because they want your money they rarely tell about the downside of where you are thinking of going.
Every country or city has its problems when it comes to personal safety and crime and because as a tourist or visitors you are not familiar with the area you are susceptible to being the target of petty criminals. Euromost city guides highlight the main problems and dangers faced by visitors to a city.
The European 'Dangers Index' contains general advice on personal safety for women travelling to Europe. The index also details the contributions made by individual countries in Europe to the wars Afghanistan and Iraq.
This data suggests that most countries in Europe are to some degree liable to a terrorist attack. Historically there is an indication that the greater the involvement a countrys involvement in these wars the more likely it is to experience terrorism.
The index also identifies countries were local terrorist groups or indigemous freedom fighters may be active such as in Russia. The European Dangers index also identifies areas such as the Balkans where former wars have left a legacy of landmines -Dangers Index
