AS Roma Football Club History & Profile
Italian Name: AS Roma
AS Roma Club History & Facts:
AS [Associazone Sportiva] Roma were formed in the Italian capital city of Rome. They were founded in 1927 by Italo Foschi, their invention can also be accredited to infamous dictator Benito Moussilini who wanted a football club to rival the dominance of Northern Italians clubs such as AC Milan.
Their city rivals Lazio were not to keen on the idea of another Roman team, but could not oppose the move. Their stadium is called the Stadio Olympico and has a capacity of 72,000,. In 2009 the club unveiled plans for a new 55,000 seater stadium which is set to be designed similarly to many top English football Stadiums.
Their nicknames are La Magica [The Magic] and I Lupi[The Wolves] and their home strip is a dark red, almost claret colour. They won their first of 3 serie A titles in 1942 this was largely due to top goal scorer with 18 golas,Amadeo Amadei.
Their standards dropped in years to come especially with a brief stint in Serie b in the 1950's. Their next successful period came at the beginning of the 1980's when they had the likes of Conti and the Brazilian Falcao in their ranks. They won the Scudetto[Italian title] in 1983. Current stars at the club are the likes of iconic skipper Francesco Totti and Creative midfielder and Italy star Danielle De Rossi who is the club's vice captain. Montenegro's play maker Marko Vucinic is also one of La Magica's top talents and has attracted the attention of some of Europe's top clubs. Roma's current manager is Barcelona's Spanish legend Luis Enrique and he guided them to a 6th place finish at the end of the 2010/2011 season. Roma have gone three years without a trophy which has lead to the dismissal of a few managers including the charismatic Italian Claudio Ranieri. The clubs president is Roberto Capelli.
AS Roma European Performance:
IThe closest they've come to Champions League glory was the 1984 European cup final where they lost to Liverpool in Rome.In 1991 they made it to an all Italian Uefa cup final where they also lost out this time to Inter Milan. They last won the serie a title in 2001 with Club legend Francesco Totti being pivotal in that success, this side also included names such as Cafu and Argentinean legend Gabriella Batistuta and Vincenzo Montella who briefly took charge of the side as a caretaker manager in 2011.
They have recently appeared in the Champions League being knocked out two seasons in a row at the quarter final stage by Manchester United.
They have won an amazing 9 coppa Italia's which is the Italian version of the FA cup. They finished second in the 2007/2008 season . Roma were beaten on penalties by Arsenal in the last 16, it was a cruel way to exit the tournament as they lost on penalty kicks. They reached the 2010/2011 season's Champions League after finishing runners up to Inter Milan in Serie A. Roma were knocked out at the group stages though which just emphasised their decline as a European force.
