Rome Attractions Sightseeing & Landmarks
If your architecture or history are not amongst your interests go back to the destinations index. Rome is littered with historic buildings some of which have survived since the before AD1. The great thing about Roma from a sightseeing pont of view is that most of these sights are near the centre and many of them are within walking distance of each other. Probably the city's top attraction is The Colosseum former home of the barbaric Gladiatorial Games. The games use to begin with fights involving animals set loose to kill one another. Around midday local petty criminals who had been given a death sentence would death would meet heir maker after they had their heads cut off. After lunch ( if you were capable of eating it) gladiators would fight various animals including lions or tigers in the main arena. Rome The Vatican
The Vatican City is an independent state with it's own sovereignty even though it is inside the city of Rome. Its independence is illustrated by the surrounding wall that encircles the 110 acres site. It is the worlds smallest country with a resident population of under a thousand people. Terrorists threats are perceived as having increased in recent years and security in public areas has been stepped up. Over all Rome is a safe city but petty crime can be a problem . Pick pocketing is rife in places particularly on board the 64 bus. The Rome Public Transport System
Rome's Metro system is easy to navigate. it has two metro lines - Line A and Line B which you interchange at Rome's main station Termini. Services begin about 5.30 am daily and finish around midnight. These services do not serve the ancient area of Rome - as the authorities decide not to extend the extend the network incase the tunneling damaged some of the unearthed ancient ruins. Restaurants in Rome
Eating out in Rome can be difficult especially in August when some restaurants close for annual holidays. Food standards are usually high but some restaurants near the Vatican are definitely overpriced. These establishments specialise in expensive catering for tourists so are not used by locals. Consequently the food quality is often disappointing.
An example of this is the I Tre Scalini at Piazza Navona 28-32. Its best described as a restaurant / cafe which has become popular with chocolate addicts from all over the world. The ' tartufo' a which combines chocolate with ice cream is legendary. There is an extensive menu offering for most tourists from which ever country they come and the food is dependable. However the tartufo aside, the food is not memorable. The prices here are memorable and a better investment maybe one of the treasures in the Vatican. more.

Rome's climate is predictable and usually consists of mild winters and rather long dry summers. November can be the wettest month in a yea. Average daily temperatures in the winter are usually above 10 centigrade (50f) with lowest night temperatures several degrees above freezing. Rome History
There are legends suggesting that Rome's early origins date back to between 758 BC and 728 BC.
