Copenhagen grew rapidly and by the 12th century it had become a city. Is name is partly derived from the word Copen - meaning commerce - Historians attribute 1167 as year Copenhagen was founded when the port was fortified. In the following centuries it became a major trading port. Between 1658 and 1659 Swedish forces unsuccesfully laid siege to the city. In 1801 the British Navy attacked the Danish Navy in the city's harbour. The British returned in 1807 and used cannon to bombard the city erasing it to the ground and killing hundreds of people.

In the mid 19th century .the city was expanded and new homes were built around the lakes. In April 1940 Nazis troops occupied the city and remained there until May 1945. The city has grown dramatically since WW2 and is now a populated metroplitan area. In recent years the country's economy has prospered. In 2000 the 4km straight of sea between Copenhagem and Malmo Sweden was breached by the Oresund Bridge and Tunnel. The connection provides the option of rail and road transport. Some shops now accept Danish or Swedish currency.

Copehagen is not as heavily populated and it has a low crime rate.January and Feb can very cold and the tourist season is from May until September. Copenhagen has some interesting sightseeing and attractions - with the Little Mermaid sculpture in memory of the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale the most famous. Kronborg Castle outside Elsinore on the edge of Zealand and 4Km from Sweden was built in the 15th century and served as a tollgate for passing ships whilst . The Viking Ship Museum though 30km from Copenhagen at the Roskilde harbour is worth a visit as it is home of five five viking ships raised from the harbours sea bed. There are a number of good restaurants in Copnhagen - Iva Davidsen often frequented by the famous. It is renowned for its smoked duck and Det Lille Apotek at nearly 300 years of age is thought to be Copenhagens oldest restaurant. The Tyvenkokkenhanskoneo-hendeselsker! locally know as 'Tyven' is a contemporary restaurant with a reputation for slightly off the wall seven course meals. Baked cod in coffee apparently is not uncommon! Though a little adventurous the quality of food is good and the combinations are refreshingly succesful.

Jazz clubs large and small are in abundance in Copenhagen. The Copenhagen Jazz House established 26 years ago is eclectic in its format and worth checking out. Central Copenhagen is only 8km from Copenhagen Kastrup Airport and the there are several bus links and a fast rail link. This section also has airport contact no's and direct links to the flight arrivals and departure boards. Helsinki & Finland

Quick preview of Finland Country Profile & Helsinki City Guide Information: Finland is thought to have been home to early settlers for over 8,000 years. Its modern history dates back to the 12th century AD when it was first invaded by Sweden - an assocation which lasted until it was conquered by Russia in the 19th century. Helsinki was established in 1550 but remained a small fishing port until the arrival of the Russians who made it the capital of Finland.

At the end of WW1 Finland became an independent country and the country's economy flourished. During WW2 Finland became embroiled in the war between Germany and Russia but inspite of being heavily bombed Helsinki escaped the severe damage that other cities suffered. Post war, Finland maintained a political neutrality in respect of the cold war between the East and West though in economic terms it was heavily dependent on its trade with Russia. After the fall of communism Finlands economy went into recession. The Finnish response to this was to invest in modern technology and to retrain its workforce.

Now Finland is one of the worlds leading players in these areas. About 10% of Finland's 5 million population live in a Helsinki and it is not densely populated. In the summer it is a very relaxing and safe city to visit with a low crime rate. The winters can be very cold. The main tourist sightseeing and attractions are found around the Market and Senate Squares with the White Catherdral probably the citys most impressive landmark. Nearby, Sofiankatu Museum Street runs between the Market and Senate Squares is an enchanting cobblestone street if you you want to journey back in time. The Suommenlinna Island and Fortress a World Heritage site is a short boat ride away and a pleasant afternoon out in the summer. Alternarively, Esplanadi Boulevard in the city centre a park with three roads where you you can doss in endless cafes or shop until you drop in n the famous Stockmann Department Store. Helsinki restaurants are generally of a good standard and some are exceptional - especially those serving serving seafood. The Palace Gourmet offering French and Finnish cuisine is probably the most notable and expensive, but there are many others including 'Bellevue' one of Helsinki's oldest restaurantes and very popular with locals. whilst 'Papa Giovanni' at the World Trade Centre is an Italian restaurant with a good reputation for its fish and meat dishe and not overpriced. Nightlife and clubbing in Helsinki is very ecleptic from the 'Soda Club' which plays acid deep house funk jazz and soul to the 'Baarikärpänen' a bar come nightclub offering dance music and R'n'B with a great atmosphere. The most eccentic club has to be 'Hevimesta' a nightclub devoted to heavy-metal music. and on Wednesdays & Sundays it heavy metal karaoke night!, where one can sing heavy-metal songs.
