St Petersburg Overview

St Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Peter The Great who said at that it would be 'Russia's gateway to Europe' It was the Capital of Russia until shortly after the Russian Revolution in 1917. It was originally called Petrograd but renamed Leningrad in 1924. After the fall of communism it was renamed St Petersburg. It is the most northern city in the world with a population of more than a million people.

For many people the most striking thing about St Petersburg is the fact it is has 342 bridges. They dominate the city's main river, the Neva, and the waterways around a 100 small islands. When designing the city Peter the Great is thought to have been influenced by the canals of Amsterdam which he thought were aesthetically more acceptable than streets. Initially there were ten bridges but after his death their building continued with the first across the River Neva being built in the 19th century. Many are named after people others have more sober names - bank or post bridge. Some reflect particular styles of architecture, whilst others are brightly coloured.

St Petersburg is also known as the city of many palaces. Particularly striking are the Baroque residences the Kikin Hall and the Menishikov Palace. It is undoubtedly one of the most architecturally one of Europes most splendid cities. Accommodation prices reflect this as well

St Petersburg History

After the Russian Revolution in 1917 this extremely bueatiful city was renamed Leningrad. During WW2 Hitler's army lay siege to the city and subjected it to constant bombardment. Inspite of this St Petersburg remains one of the most bueatiful cities in Europe. It is renowned for its palatial buildings and is the home of many of Russia's wealthy and powerful including Primeminster Vladimir Putin.

Hotel accommodation in Saint Petersburg can be very expensive particularly in the larger hotels and especially in the summer. Private rentals are significantly cheaper. In the winter the weather can be very harsh and the sunsets about 3pm local time.

Sightseeing & Attractions

Public Transport In Saint Petersburg Russia

St. Petersburg's metro system is extremely efficient with a trains every three minutes in the rush hours (08.00 -10am & 17.00 - 19.00pm). To enter the metro you have to purchase a 'Zheton' which is a token costing 12RBL. These are purchased from the 'Kassa' office at the station. You may buy tickets for multiple rides which are like season tickets and valid for a week or longer. The tickets for these rides are available in multiples of 10. If you need to change lines you will have to walk along underground walkways each line has its own station. The changes take a few minutes. When a train arrives at a station the name of the station is broadcast followed by the name of the next stop.

Try to avoid travelling at peak times as the carriages can be very crowded. The buses in St Petersburg are run by a host of private companies. They are a mini buses which have set a set route. Fares vary between 10 -20Rbl. You have to pay the driver on entry. Each minibus or 'Marashrukha' as they are called has a number. Apart from the starting point there are no stops.! When you see the number you want you have to wave it down like a taxi. If you want to get off you have to say 'ostanavites pazhaluista' otherwise you will end up where ever the bus is going!

The City bus station serves other Russian cities & international destinations. This is where Eurolines services finish.. The bus station is not in central St Petersburg. It is a twenty minute journey on the metro from close by metro Ligovsky pr. Alternatively it should not cost more than 140 Rbl by taxis. The bus station also sells railway tickets.

Sightseeing & Attractions in St Petersburg

The Gatchina Palace with its private apartments built by Alexander 111 for his family. This medieval style palace. which architectually is 'reserved' in palace terms is surrounded by grounds that include parks and lakes cab be found at Privokzalnaia Ploshchad. A far more lavish palace is Mramornyi Dvorets (The Marble Palace) which dates back to 1768. It was commisioned by Catherine The Great as a present for her lover Grigiry Orlov and contains 32 types of marble inside and out. It took 17 years to complete and Orlov died before it was finished. Today it is part of The State Russian Museum and it the home to a permanent exhibition of 'Foriegn Artists in Russia'. It is located at Millionaia Ulitisa 5/1.

The 250 metre long drawbridge Dvortsovyi Most, though only 90 years old, is particularly pretty at night when its fully lit. In the summer it is opened at night to allow shipping to pass by. It can be found close to the Winter Palace. One of St Petersburg's imposing sights is the Monument to the 'Heroic Defenders of Lenningrad' which is situated at Ploschad Pobedy. The monument which is dedicated to the defenders of Leningrad in WW2 includes an underground Memorial Hall which chillingly documents these experiences. Admission Free.

The famous Saint Petersburg State Circus can be found at Gosvdarstvennyi Tsirk. The circus which was originally formed in 1877 includes camels ridden by monkeys, motorbikes ridden by bears and tip-toeing elephants along with traditional acts such as acrobats, clowns and strongmen. Performance times and reservations can be made on tel + 7 812 210 4411.

Restaurants in St Petersburg

Aptly named The Russian Restaurant on the corner of Sadovaya and Gorokhova (nearest metro Sadovaya), this restaurant offers Russian food at very reasonable prices. The menu is in Russian but this is not a problem as all the food is visible and you can indicate your choice. The dishes which are mainly chicken or pork and are accompanied by vegatables, potatoe and rice. The Petrogradskaya Bistro at Kamennoostrovskiy Prospekt, Mira Ulitsa offers a wide range of food. The choice includes borscht (meat dumplings), pasta, and other hot dishes as well as salads deserts and sandwiches. Extremely clean restaurant which is very fairly priced. The Grand Hotel Europe opposite the Symphony Hall offers exceptionally good torts with whipped cream and other deserts as part of its 'afternoon tea' menu in its Mezzanine Cafe which is reasonably priced. Meals in the hotels main restaurant are in comparison very expensive. The Dostoevsky Watering Hole, 82 Moike is a coffee shop which sells vegatarian food, cakes and vodka. Fairly priced whatever your preference! Probably one of the most bizaare restaurants in Europe can be found at Kazanskaya ul 35.

The Russian Comrade Restaurant has two distinctly different dining rooms offering the same menu. One room, (pro the old Soviet lifestyle) is dedicated to the memory of Lenin screens old black and white movies on televisions screens accompanied by modern music. The other room which has opposing political sentiments has an air of chaos about it with various items the wrong way up. On the walls there are very graphic and explicit murals depicting Lenin's sex life with different lovers. Oh and by the way it offers good food is which is predominantly traditional Russian but accompanied by a few international bistro dishes. The service is good and the prices are average. Well worth the experience.
