Vienna Overview
The Celts founded Vienna around 500BC when they settled there. In 15BC It was renamed Vindobonna when it was taken over by the Romans. In the Middle Ages it became the home of the Hapsburg Dynasty and gradually became a centre for those who appreciated art music science and cuisine. When the Ottomans invaded Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries their advances were halted outside Vienna.
In 1805 Vienna was designated the capital of the Austrian Empire and subsequently the Austrian Hungarian Empire. Shortly afterwards it established itself as a leading influence on European politics and in the early part of the 19th century drew up several treaties to resolve international territorial disputes. After WW1 it became the capital of the Austrian Republic. This status was lost to Berlin when Germany occupied the country from 1938 until 1945.
The arts are part of Vienna's lifestyle. It has 'institutions' acclaimed for their productions of classical plays, opera and classical music. These productions are complimented by a multitude of smaller companies, who offer similiar quality programmes of contemporary theatre and the performing arts.
