Football In South Africa

Johnamnesburg is the heartbeat of South African football.  Most of South Africa's professional clubs come from in or around the city, The Kaizer Chiefs who had an English Rock band named after them are one of the Cities most popular sides. There is also the likes of the Orlando Pirates who were last years Runners up in the National Premier League, Jomo Cosmos and one of the countries oldest clubs, the Moroka Swallows. Professional football in South Africa began in the city centre offices of the Old Rand Daily newspaper in 1958. The countries biggest money making game takes place between two Johnannesburg teams, The Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in an fixture called the Soweto Derby. 

Some of South Africans best known football stars come from Jo'burg including ex English Premier League player Lucas Radebe, Ace Ntsoelengoe and the man known as 'The Black Prince of South African soccer' Jomo Sono who played along side footballing legends Pele and Franz Beckenbauer in the United States. Current South African striker Benni Mccarthy's older brother Jerome played for the Kaiser Chiefs. The city has hosted some major sporting  contests in the past such as the 1995 Rugby World Cup final which was held at the Ellis Park Stadium, the site where South Africa defeated New Zealand to become world champions.
