US Airport & US Bound Aircraft Security Measures

Regulations introduced in January 2010 require all citizens of Afghanistan, Algeria, Lebanon, Libya, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Yemen to receive a pat down and an extra security checks of their carry-on bags before boarding a plane bound for the United States, Additionally, citizens of Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria — nations considered by the US as “state sponsors of terrorism” — face the same requirement.

Following the attempt on Christmas Day 2009 to blow up an airliner as it it approched Detroit International Airoirt security measures security measures on domestic American flights and international flights to the US have been increased. Some of these measures are also being applied to flights outside the US. The most ‘ publically profiled’ of these measures is the requirement for passengers to undergo total body x-ray screening before boarding a plane. The scanners for these x-rays are widely used in the United States and are being introduced as a matter of priority at airports elsewhere in the world. The scanners reveal every aspect of the human physique and are operated by technicians by procedures which respect the privacy of those being x-rayed. Anyone of any age, without exception, may be required to undergo this scanning. Refusal by anyone to be scanned will almost certainly result in their being refused to permission to fly and possible detention by the security services.

General Advice For Passing Through Airport Security
  • Arrive on time. Arrival time recommendations vary by airline and day of travel, so check with your carrier. Remember to give yourself adequate time to check your baggage and move through security.
  • Wear slip-on shoes. This will allow you to take them off and put them back on quickly, without having to sit down.
  • Pets.
  • Children. Please take your infants and children out of baby carriers and strollers and take them through the metal detector with you. Strollers and baby carriers go through the X-ray machine with your bags. If possible, collapse your stroller before you get to the metal detector. For more information traveling with children,
  • Think before you speak. Belligerent behavior, inappropriate jokes and threats will not be tolerated. They will result in delays and possibly missing your flight. Local law enforcement may be called as necessary.
  • Prepare your 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag of liquids before arriving at the airport.
  • Pack all your coats and jackets in your checked baggage when possible. All coats and jackets must go through the X-ray machine for inspection
