Average Weather Conditions In Amsterdam Holland

Because of its close proximity to the Gulf Stream the weather in Amsterdam is very changeable. It is not-dis similar to the weather in England except that when an easterly or north easterly airstream sets in during the winter night temperatures can be very low often remaining well below freezing through out the day. If these temperatures persist the canals in Amsterdam will freeze over.

The coldest months of the year are January and February followed by December and March.

Statisically October has an expectancy of 20 rainy days more than other month and May and June with 14 days a piece may be the driest. However July and August are by far the wettest due to downpours in thunderstorms. These are also usually the warmest months.

June is usually the sunniest month with a daily average of eight hours sunshine whilst in January two hours is the norm.

Most of the Netherlands is below sea level and the highest part of the country is only 30 metres above sea level. As a result Amsterdam and the country as a whole is very exposed in windy weather essp[ecially in coastal areas..

Visitors to Rotterdam in particular with Asthma should note that in winter this city can have some bad fogs during the winter.

Holland is famous for the threat it faces from flooding during tidal surges in the North Sea aggravated by Atlantic storms. In the last 50 years defences against these surges have been strengthened on an ongoing basis and its is a safe country to visit.
